I really think this needs to be moved from just hardmode to something a little more understandable, like killing one of the hardmode bosses FIRST, to make sure that people are actually able to do it. The best items a player will have pre-hardmode is molton or crimson equipment, maybe some stuff from WoF or shadow chests, and these items simply aren't enough to take them on without abusing gravity potions, arenas (in the case of the destroyer) but even with these armor simply isn't enough to take very much damage. These were the biggest baddies before 1.2, and while the health is lowered slightly, attack was not.
